Local seniors will see the benefits of a recent donation to SIGN (Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbors) in Yorkton. Last Thursday SGEU (Saskatchewan Government Employees Union) Local 1115 donated a new car to be used to transport seniors.

"We're pleased to be able to do this," said Sid Wonitowy, executive member of SGEU at a recent presentation event held late last week. "SGEU members are a part of the community. Our members work in social services and parks... we take care of highways. We are in touch with community members and this donation is part of our commitment to the community of Yorkton."

Wonitowy also points out, SGEU has had a presence in Saskatchewan since 1913. "That's almost 100 years so you'll see us everywhere you go... and the one thing that's unique about Saskatchewan people is that we like to help one another so it's with that thought that we're here. We're happy to give back and we're happy to help provide a service to the seniors of this community."

The donation of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will enable the local Senior Mobility program to continue to provide a service to Yorkton seniors for years to come says Andrew Sedley, Executive Director of SIGN. SIGN will use the donated vehicle to transport seniors to appointments and to pick up groceries etc.

"We're very appreciative... we have an aging population in this community. When you look per capita provincially, Yorkton is one of the highest per capita for seniors. By providing a seniors mobility program to our seniors we're providing low cost transportation... last year alone we made 4,588 trips... this year it will be even higher... so this is a huge benefit to us and I want to thank SGEU..."

SIGN has served the community of Yorkton for the last 42 years.
