The seniors' fitness stations were officially unveiled at a recent ribbon cutting ceremony at Erichson Park on Franko Drive. Representatives of both the city and the seniors' 55 plus games representatives were on hand to mark the event.
Yorkton mayor, His Worship James Wilson, says the project came out of the city's strategic planning for a healthy community. The plan calls for providing a healthy community with trail systems and exercise equipment so people can be out and active in the community and enjoy it, Wilson says.
Yorkton Recreation Services Manager Darren Spelay says the park and equipment in it is the result of a contribution by the local Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association branch. Funds were allocated by the Zone 4 host committee for the 2004 55 plus zone games and the 2008 Saskatchewan Senior Fitness games host committee. The committee set aside $12,000 for the park. Working with Yorkton Recreation Services, the group submitted a proposal to the city for the outdoor fitness equipment. Upon receiving city council approval the committee placed the equipment in Erichson Park.
Co-chairperson of the Seniors Fitness Games, Karen Thies, says the group was looking for something that would be permanent in the city of Yorkton. Benches, walks and flower pots were among items considered.
The group learned of seniors' playgrounds being established in Europe and some major Canadian cities. The idea took hold and was proposed for Yorkton.
Hopefully the idea will expand throughout the city, says Thies. Erichson Park was selected for the initial placement because of its location where many 50 plus people currently reside. As Yorkton changes and grows, Thies hopes other locations will see similar development.
