Senseless oil spill

To the Editor:

I don't understand this oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. What's the matter with these well paid and educated engineers?

All safety and potential accidents (what to do in case) should have been woven into the fabric of the design of these oil rigs. There should have been (with our state of the art technology that we have today) barriers pressed into the ocean floor reaching up to the surface of the water to catch or hold oil in case there's a leak or spill. Any idiot knows this. Yet they put this monster out there with no safety mechanisms in place in case something goes wrong.

So much for our high tech university degree engineers.

And, furthermore, what's the matter with our governments and oil companies that endorse such bad designs and poor planning and then go ahead and place them in our oceans?

It is idiocy on a grand scale.
