The Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) Grade 9 boys volleyball team, a perennial powerhouse in the past, winning multiple district titles, ran into some stiff opposition at this year's district championships. Despite their best efforts, the team was eliminated from competition after the round robin,
Team coach Curtis Moen explains the district competition featured two pools of four teams with the SHHS Grade 9s in a pool with Langenburg, Sturgis, and Melville Comprehensive School.
After losing to Langenburg and Sturgis, SHHS took Melville to three games before falling to the Junior Cobras, precluding further, playoff competition.
Overall the team had a decent season, Moen says, playing in several Grade 9 and 10 tournaments around the province. Losing the team captain to injury halfway through the season was a major handicap to the Grade 9 Saints. "That put kind of a hindrance on our team, to hold us back a bit. We were lacking the big hitters and setter on our team," Moen states.
Several players stood out during the season. Zak Todas filled in for the captain and setter. Jared Byczynski was key blocker and Montana Belitsky was a key hitter, Moen concludes.
