The Sacred Heart High School (SHHS) Saints senior football team improved its record to 2-0 to tie for the lead in the league with the recent 41-6 win over the visiting Swan River Tigers Thursday afternoon.
Saints running back Preston Liebrecht led the way scoring two touchdowns within a little over three minutes of the opening whistle to give the Saints a 13-0 lead after one quarter of play.
With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Liebrecht added his third major of the game. The point after was good to make it 28-0 for Yorkton.
On the Tigers first possession of the second half, SHHS blocked a punt attempt deep in the Swan River end and Liebrecht ran the ball in of this fourth six-pointer of the game.
With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter Kade Mihalchuk took a pass into the Saints end zone to light up the scoreboard for the Tigers to make the score 35-6 for Sacred Heart after three quarters.
Saints kicker Robert Okeny, whose punts invariably had the Tigers taking possession of the ball deep in their own their own end, had a good day. Okeny was good on most single point convert attempts and kicked a 52 yard punt to cap Sacred Heart scoring at 50-6.
Saints head coach Trent Senger says the boys played well on all sides of the ball. The defense was strong. The offense played very well and the special teams did all the right things, Senger lists.
He says Saints kicker Okeny is having another amazing season again this year. Senger refers to the 52 yard punt for the safety point at the end of the game. Okeny's kick-offs are averaging about 65 yards this year, he reports. "It gives us a lot of time to come down and cover," he says.
Liebrecht, who scored four touchdowns in the game, and Logan Coutts, who added two, more have become the feature players for Sacred Heart. Liebrecht is the speed back and Coutts has great hands which can haul in the ball.
Unfortunately Saints number two back, Colton Kitzan, went out on with a broken finger and a dislocation in the first play of the game. "We missed him this game because he's a workhorse too," Senger says.
The Saints will take on the Esterhazy Warriors next in what Senger predicts will be a tough game. "We don't really have any easy opposition this year," he closes.
