If you leave the house and venture around town you've no doubt been witness to it. For the life of me though, I can't see how a person could look in the mirror and think that it's an attractive look. But what's a society to do? It seems to be the "in" thing with quite a few teens these days.
It's the saggy pants look.
You know.... jeans hanging down to the bottom of the butt... boxer shorts glaring out on top... seriously, in some instances you wonder why they bother with pants at all. But what to do? You give it a look, shake your head and walk on. Not in Florida though.
One Florida lawmaker will be welcoming students back to school this year with a new leather belt. The move is intended to help beltless students comply with a new state law that bans 'saggy' pants on college campuses. Senator Gary Siplin says he has been pushing for the "Pull Your Pants Up Law" for the last six years and this year he finally got his wish. Apparently Arkansas also has the same law in place. "We want our kids to believe they're going to college, part of that is an attitude and part of that is being dressed professionally," says Siplin.
While it seems kind of silly to have a need to put a "Pull Your Pants Up Law" in place I can see his point. By college age, kids should be looking to the future and the reality is, how are they ever going to get hired anywhere, sporting that look? Can you imagine your waiter wearing pants like that? Your dentist or your letter carrier?
Sure it's likely a passing fad, and maybe something we needn't worry about but dressing like this doesn't have a place in the business world, unless of course, you happen to be an underwear model.
That said, this is not a popular belief by all - obviously quite a few students say it's an infringement on rights and that people should be able to make their own fashion choices. Maybe so, but how can sporting your underwear in public really be considered a fashion choice?
We've all gone through our phases of quirky fashion choices... from furry boots, to shoulder pads, to leggings, but from what I remember we were always covered up and we had to change to suit our environment. (Not that I was any fashion guru... I wore my brothers hand-me-downs for the most part). There just comes a point in time where you have to grow up and you have to follow a few rules. So I say pull up your pants and "suck it up buttercup."
