The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) Senior Lady Raiders finished second overall in the recent SHHS senior girls' volleyball tournament over the weekend, falling to a taller, tougher Melville Comprehensive squad in the final match.
YRHS coach Lee Poncelet says he's happy with his team performance. "We were 11-3 after the round robin, finishing in second place," he notes.
The Lady Raiders downed SHHS Lady Saints in the semi-final to advance to the final against the Melville Cobras.
Poncelet says his team was passing well in the tournament. "If we pass well then our offense is there and that's consistently the case," he comments.
The passing seemed to break down in the final match against Melville he suggests.
Poncelet says the Lady Raiders have been playing consistent volleyball, reaching the point where the team could contend with any 5A team in the province.
Currently the girls are getting psyched up for regional, hoping to be one of the top five teams to advance to provincials, he states. "That's our goal right now, to make provincials," Poncelet suggests.
He sees regionals as being a tough battle with six or seven teams battling for four berths at provincials. "Every team there is going to have to play their best game," Poncelet observes.
He ranks the Lady Raiders one of the top five teams in the region. They will go into regionals as contenders for one of the top four spots at provincials if they battle hard. "Any body can finish first. Anybody can finish fourth and anybody can finish fifth. Fifth doesn't get to go and fourth does," he sums up.
