That's the Yorkton United U10 Storm soccer team, not the storm that devastated Yorkton on July 1.
The U10 Storm competed this last weekend in the annual A.C.F.C. Summerfest Soccer Tournament in Regina.
The first game for the U10 squad was on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. versus Q.C. Green from Regina. Q.C. was first on the board but them were unable to bear the Storm as Yorkton put seven straight goals into the Q.C. Green net.
Nicholas Fetsch scored a hat trick while both Matthew Cochrane and Jordan Rusnack added two goals each. The second game was Saturday morning versus the U.C.T. Pirates from Regina at 10:00 a.m.
The Pirates found themselves in rough waters as the Storm came away with a 9-0 victory. Both Nicholas Fetsch and Jordan Rusnack had hat tricks, Matthew Mandziuk popped in two and Matthew Cochrane added one goal. Zackary Shearer had the shutout in net.
The third game was versus the host A.C.F.C. Pumas team from Regina at 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The U10 Storm continued their outstanding performance with a 4-1 win. Jordan Rusnack and Nicholas Fetsch added singles and team captain Matthew Mandziuk scored two goals both on beautiful free kicks over the keepers head.
The last round robin game was Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. versus the R.E.U. Rebels from Regina.
R.E.U. had a very strong team and the game play went back and forth with the game ending in a 0-0 tie. Zackary Shearer had the shutout in net. The tie was enough to give Yorkton second place in the seven team tournament and a spot in the 3:00 p.m. final versus Swift Current Forrester United.
Swift Current was also winning a lot of their games by heavy margins much like Yorkton. This was a meeting of the two best teams in the tournament.
The Yorkton United Storm were able to take a 1-0 half-time lead when Jordan Rusnack was able to put tap the ball into the net off a crossing play. However the Swift Current team tied the game up shortly into the second half. Jordan Rusnack added his second goal of the game to pull ahead and Matthew Mandziuk added Yorkton's third goal of the game to take a comfortable lead.
However Swift Current was able to flood the Yorkton zone and score two goals with only about two minutes to play in regular time. Yorkton was unable to capitalize on a few chances and the game was sent into golden goal extra time.
The Yorkton U10 Storm had a couple of chances before Swift Current was able to bring the ball down field, score and end the game. Despite the loss the kids were quite happy to lead the tournament with a well deserved silver medal. The coaches were quite pleased with the play of the team and each players progress as the tournament went on.
