(Editors Note, the following is an Open Letter to Chief Spence of the Attawapiskat Cree Nation.)
Dear Chief Spence,
I have been watching your recent press conferences on CBC television and I am very impressed with the leadership direction you are taking and with the support of Grand Chief Loutitt.
I understand this is a very tiring and stressful time for you and your community. I think you are doing a great job speaking to issues facing your people. I applaud your efforts to assert your right to self determination and self government.
I was very happy when you stood your ground on the issue of third party management. Not allowing the federal government to make unilateral decisions and to enter onto your traditional lands takes a lot of courage.
I agree that third party management is not the solution to the many problems facing your community. The unilateral appointment of the third party manager (the donut man) by the colonial office shows a total disrespect of the people of Attawapiskat Cree Nation.
As Chief of John Cochrane First Nation Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People I have been fighting with the Canadian government for recognition of our treaty rights for decades.
I know your situation is very stressful and standing up to the federal government is often a thankless process. Just know that others are supportive of your efforts to stand up for what is right and your efforts to have the government uphold their obligations properly.
I am also pleased to hear the United Nations have been asked to intervene.
You are doing great job not only for your first nations but for other first nations across Canada. Our prayers are with you and your community. Ekosi Chief John Dorion, John Cochrane First Nation Kaministikominahiko-skak Cree People.
