Yorkton Harvest goalie Taryn Phaneuf who backstopped the Harvest to their first win of the current regular season, was named first game star Saturday night in the game between the Yorkton Harvest and the visiting Saskatoon Contacts.
The six foot one, 190 pound netminder is the son of Shawn and Sherry Phaneuf of Prince Albert.
He rose through the Prince Albert minor hockey system before coming to the Yorkton Harvest. "I came down in the spring and they told me I had a good chance to make the team so I came back in fall and earned my spot here and it's been great," Phaneuf explains.
He says the first win Saturday was a big win, The team bounced back after being buried by the Notre Dame Hounds Wednesday night in its home opener. "We came back strong, regrouped and earned a hard fought win," Phaneuf states.
Some of the shots he faced were tough to see but the team did a good job in front of him to minimize the Contacts scoring chances, he says.
Phaneuf admits he was a little nervous when the contacts scored two quick third period goals to pull within one. But the team regrouped and pulled together and held the Contacts off for the win.
The one thing he'd like to improve, he says, is his speed. "The game is a lot quicker than I expected it to be. Plays happen so fast you don't even have time to react sometimes," he suggests.
Both the team and the city have been great, Phaneuf declares. "There are very friendly people here and the team gets along well. It's going to be a good year," he predicts.
