To the Editor: As a teacher for the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School, I am proud of my profession in assisting students to prepare for their future in the ever changing technological/traditional society.
Even though I thoroughly enjoy my career, I am forced to take on a second position to pay for my tuition and cost of living expenses. There is also little time for preparation of lessons and extracurricular activities. My current salary does not reflect my numerous duties that are required to be an effective teacher.
An increase in salary is necessary to maintain competent, effective teachers on staff in order to reduce economics stress that is added on to the academic stress.
Furthermore, in order to maintain my professional competence as a teacher, I must further my training in the graduate level. I find it a challenge to continue my studies as the university tuition is substantially out of reach for my salary to cover.
Teachers are valuable since it is through quality education that wellness can be achieved - that affects a person physically, economically, socially, and spiritually.
