The Yorkton Terriers hockey club held its exhibition home opener on Tuesday night versus the Melville Millionaires.
With jobs still on the line for players on both sides the game featured a high level of intensity not typically seen in preseason action.
The Millionaires struck first as Mark Owen converted a powerplay chance just over a minute into the first period. Steve Terry assisted on the 1-0 goal.
Yorkton's Riley Paterson knotted the game back at one apiece at 14:55 of the frame with a goal from newcomers Zak Majkowski and Kyle McLeod.
The Terriers took the lead in the second period thanks to a goal from the aforementioned McLeod, assisted by Paterson. The shot beat Millionaires goalie Kyle Jahraus, who played the entire game.
However, Melville evened the affair just thirty seconds later on a shot from Craig Karius - which managed to elude Terriers starter Devin Peters.
Nathan Murray responded with a shorthanded goal for the Terriers to make the score 3-2 heading into the second intermission.
The goal was largely due to an outstanding effort from Kevin Cann, who separated a Millionaire defenceman from the puck and dished it to Murray for the chance.
The Terriers sent out a new goalie for the third period - backup candidate Myles Dunne. Dunne was no slouch on the night, making several clutch saves to preserve the Yorkton victory.
The third period would be a scoreless one as Yorkton went on to win by the score of 3-2.
The Terrier powerplay was power-less for the game as they were unable to register a goal on four chances.
The opportunity to make an impression on the coaching staff was not wasted by forwards Kyle McLeod and Nathan Murray. Both players were adept at creating chances and making plays in the offensive zone.
