"The old Saskatchewan was the place to be from. The new Saskatchewan is the place to be." - Saskatchewan Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris.
Is he right? Looking at the numbers he is, provided the average Joe doesn't get lost somewhere in the shuffle.
Our population is at an all time high - up by nearly 16,000 people in past year. More people are working than ever and getting paid more... but will we have what it takes to ensure all residents have the opportunity to move forward and to keep the provincial ball of prosperity rolling?
According to statistics, Saskatchewan continues to be the fastest growing province in Canada as the population grew by 1.53 per cent in the past year. As of October 1, 2010, there were 1,049,701 people living in the province, an increase of 4,079 in the past quarter and 15,855 in the past year. Norris maintains the sustained population growth is a clear sign of the continuing strength of the Saskatchewan economy.
A 7.7 per cent jump in average weekly earnings, the largest increase in Canada, has also lifted Saskatchewan above the national average for the first time. Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings were $875.47, the third highest in the country after Alberta ($1,012.54) and Ontario ($889.84), and ahead of the national average of $863.33.
"Today's numbers are more good news for our people and our economy heading into the holiday season," adds Norris.
"With Saskatchewan expected to lead the nation in economic growth in the new year, there is reason for continued optimism."
The numbers look great and are an encouraging sign, we just need to ensure they transfer from paper to reality and that all who live here can take advantage and be proud to say, "The new Saskatchewan is the place to be."
