There's no vacation like a 'staycation'

Over worked? Under paid? Feeling the crunch yet still in desperate need of that summer getaway? Don't despair! Why not try a "STAYCATION"? As friends and co-workers head out on holidays to cottages and far away destinations, admittedly a "staycation"

Over worked? Under paid? Feeling the crunch yet still in desperate need of that summer getaway? Don't despair! Why not try a "STAYCATION"?

As friends and co-workers head out on holidays to cottages and far away destinations, admittedly a "staycation" doesn't sound all that much fun but sometimes a person just has to make due.

Not yet sure of how my summer plans will unfold, I was checking out some web sites the other day when I happened upon some stay at home vacation ideas that, well... in a pinch, may not be all that bad!

According to the site, a staycation can be a great way to enjoy a "vacation" while at the same time, saving money on transportation and accommodation. The key, though, lies in the planning.

First and foremost, you need to create a holiday environment. Some people set up a tent in their back yard and sleep outdoors, others plan outings and enjoy local festivals, attractions, parks and activities. This also means a staycationer has to completely put work and household chores aside. Whatever time has been allotted for "vacation," has to be for just that. If that means turning off the cell phone, the computer, and not answering the door - then so be it. If you want your family to buy into the concept, you might consider involving them in the planning process - let them come up with activities to experience and sights to see.

Here are some other tips I read:

Set a start date and an end date for your staycation.

Avoid working on projects around the house. It won't feel like a vacation if you spend your time completing chores.

Avoid everyday routine.

Set a staycation budget but don't let this deter you from having a good time.

Act like a tourist in your own town, or province if the budget permits. What sights, scenes and activities would you recommend for visiting family or friends? Try these out with the eyes and attitude of a tourist.

In the end, a well-planned staycation just might leave you with enough fond memories and photos to get you through the year - without the monthly reminder of a grander holiday on your credit-card statement.

Happy holidays!
