Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) alumnus and former Saskatchewan Roughrider cheerleader Brittany Thies was back for her third year running a cheerleading camp as part of the football weekend in Yorkton.

This year about 100 youngsters signed up for the camp which was broken down into two sessions of about 50 kids in each session. There was a session for six to nine year-olds and another for those 10 to 13, Thies reports.

Cheerleading is becoming very popular, Thies claims with the sport continuing to grow every year both in this province and across the country.

Cheerleading incorporates a lot of dance elements, Thies points out. "We actually had a lot of dancers come out for the camp," she says.

In addition to dance, cheerleading has elements of gymnastics which offers a great cardio workout, she adds.

Cheerleading needs to be recognized as a sport, Thies insists. "It is one of the most dangerous sports around. People just don't know that," she claims.

The camp raised over $650 for Yorkton Minor Football, Thies reports. "Next year we'll just keep growing bigger and better," she closes.
