Think perhaps it's a lack of vision?

To the Editor: The return of the "Royal" designation for our Canadian Navy and Airforce is an interesting initiative. In relation to all of the other possible actions of a newly elected majority government this is probably as harmless as any.

The return of the "Royal" designation for our Canadian Navy and Airforce is an interesting initiative. In relation to all of the other possible actions of a newly elected majority government this is probably as harmless as any.

It has the added advantage of not adding significantly to the deficit.

Our daily lives in Canada contain a host of elements that bare witness to our historical ties to the royal family. These institutions and practices are not likely to change in any dramatic way. They go far beyond the naming of our armed services.

The vast majority of Canadians celebrate these connections, or at the very least, have grown to accept them.

But what does this initiative tell us about our present federal government? What are they going to come up with next?

Maybe they would like to send our maple leaf flag to the cleaners and have it come back looking like the Union Jack.

Perhaps we could send our constitution back to Westminster. If the Brits would have it.

It is imperative for those who lead to try to take us forward to where we are going - not back to where we have been.
