In this spot in the December 15 issue of The News Review there appeared a write up entitled "Tis the season to give - carefully."
The article stated there are some CEOs of well known charitable organizations - including UNICEF, World Vision and the American Red Cross - who may be taking advantage of those organizations by collecting substantial salaries with the bulk of donated dollars not making it to help those they are intended to aid.
The News Review stated, "Topping the list is the CEO of UNICEF, who allegedly earns, $1,200,000 a year PLUS expenses, accommodation allowance and, get this, a Rolls Royce no less. Poor soul. The children supposedly aided receive less than 13 cents of every dollar donated. That's just not right. Other charitable CEOs or presidents at the trough include the top people at World Vision, and unfortunately also the American Red Cross..."
The News Review has since been informed the information gathered to write the article stemmed from a malicious rumour containing false information. Salaries for UNICEF Canada staff are disclosed on the Canada Revenue Agency website and financial information regarding UNICEF Canada is available at website www.unicef.ca.
Both World Vision and Unicef salaries are reportedly far less than those published in last week's News Review. Also, Unicef reports 81 per cent of donations to UNICEF Canada support UNICEF's work for the world's most vulnerable children.
More information on World Vision - including financial and mission statements are available at: worldvision.ca.
Last week's column appeared at one of the most important times of the year for raising funds to reach as many vulnerable children around the world as possible and The News Review apologizes for any confusion which may have been caused or misleading information that may have been published.
