Why not do your part for the environment and your pocket book this week by leaving that vehicle in the garage and climbing on your bike and riding to work?

May 16-23 is Bike to Work Week in Yorkton.

"You can eliminate the carbon emissions from your vehicle for five days and avoid having to buy gasoline at $1.37/L. And it's fast," says Merlin Toth, President of the Sunrise Cycling Club. "I live in the North end of Yorkton and I work in the center of the city near the intersection of Broadway and Gladstone. It takes me about six minutes to drive to work and 12 minutes to cycle." It's not a significant difference he says.

"With a little bit of planning to avoid the real heavy traffic areas and with our new cycling lanes it's no more than a quick cardio workout and a lot more enjoyable than a stationary exercise bike. And it saves gas!"

"So why don't you pull that bike out of the garage, dust it off and climb on it this week? If not for the week, then let's fill the cycling lanes this Friday."

Toth also reminds residents to ride safe. "Always wear a helmet, wear bright colored clothing to increase your visibility and remember a bicycle is considered a vehicle when it's being ridden on the street, always obey all the traffic laws.

"If you see someone barrelling down Darlington in a high-viz green vest or jacket, wave, that's me. Hopefully you're waving from the saddle of a bicycle. I'll be looking for you."
