Our country may have one of the strongest economies going but with that said, Canada's cities - including Yorkton - have needs.
Saskatchewan's Minister of Municipal Affairs Darryl Hickie joined representatives from across the country last week at the annual meeting of provincial and territorial ministers responsible for municipal government.
Hickie was one of many voices promoting long term infrastructure planning and a collaborative approach to developing infrastructure strategies and programs to help fund municipal infrastructure needs.
"It is essential that we work together at all levels of government to ensure long term infrastructure planning and funding has everyone's needs in mind," Hickie says.
He emphasizes the fact that all levels of government must collaborate and take a long term asset management approach to infrastructure planning to support Saskatchewan municipalities. Infrastructure services such as drinking water, wastewater, transportation and recreation are critical to providing a high quality of life.
The dollars and the people are rolling in and now we have to maintain current infrastructure to grow into the future. Working together with others in the same boat just makes sense. What we need to do now is to take the ideas from the boardroom to reality.
We've got roads to fix, buildings to repair and new ideas that need funding to develop. How can we develop a plan to keep the current trend expanding?
