It's been a good year as far as tourism is concerned, with an estimated $37.3 million in travel receipts being generated in the Yorkton constituency in 2010 alone.
President of Tourism Yorkton, Neil Thom, was on hand at a meeting of Yorkton City Council Monday to talk about local initiatives and to provide an update of where things are at when it comes to tourism in this area.
"The City of Yorkton is bustling with economic activity," says Thom adding, new events and a new crop interpretive centre to be located at the tourism building will further add to the excitement in 2012.
He credits the support of council for a big part of the success and growth in the local industry.
"I'd also like to take a moment to recognize the provincial government for its initiatives this past year. There's more funding for Tourism Saskatchewan and a tremendous revitalization in our provincial partnership..."
A big thank you also goes out to the many volunteers who Thom says work tirelessly to bring events and attractions to the city, attracting visitors and benefiting all.
The coming year will see at least three new events coming to Yorkton - snowmobile races, and outdoor hunting and fishing show and a 50 plus event.
"That's great news for all the tourism stakeholders in the city."
And great news for the residents. In fact, in Yorkton alone there are 93 tourism related businesses and more than 1,300 people employed in tourism related industries.
"Combine that with the more than $37 million spent here and Tourism plays an important role in the city's economy."
