The Yorkton United Under 16 Girls soccer team won a silver medal in the annual Regina Summerfest Tournament recently.

The girls played four round robin matches. A 10 point system was used to determine which two of the six teams in the round robin would make it to the final. The United team placed second in points just behind Swift Current whom they met in the final.

In round robin play Yorkton's first opponent was the Swift Current Under 14 team. Yorkton United won 3-0.

Rita Fetsch scored the hat trick and Edie Schramm recorded the shut out.

The girls then played Winnipeg Rush claiming a 3-1 win. Fetsch scored another hat trick in the game.

Yorkton United then played the Swift Current Under 16 team with Swift Current edging out Yorkton 2-1.

Fetsch scored the lone goal for United.

In Yorkton's last round robin game against Regina Unidad, it was do or die for the girls. A win would advance Yorkton to the final, a loss would send them home.

Kennedy Elmy did a great job in the game, shadowing a very dangerous player for the Regina team.

Bryce Sherring, Kristen Jonassen and Fetsch scored to clinch the win which advanced Yorkton United to the tournament final against Swift Current.

In the final, Swift Current played a very strong game and frustrated the attack of Yorkton United. Swift Current won the match and the tournament gold with a 3-0 shutout of Yorkton United.

While Yorkton entered in the Under 16 category, the majority of the players were Under 14. During the tournament, central defender Kaitlin Inglis, central midfielder Kristen Jonassen and striker Rita Fetsch all had outstanding performances. They all took leadership roles and led their young team to excellent results.

Under 14 player Caleigh Grunert was very steady as right defender for the entire tournament.

All the team members played hard and gave a strong effort in spite of playing a lot of games in a short time.

The girls used this tournament as a tune up for their upcoming Provincial tournament July 22-24 in Regina. The team is coached by Alfredo Bermudez and Ashley Chillog and managed by Al Varjassy. Jeanne Fetsch helped out during the weekend, coaching the girls during the round robin. Bermudez was able to be there to coach in the Final.

The team would like to thank their jersey sponsors, Elmy Farms and Sasktel SecurTek.
