November 3-11 has officially been declared as Veteran's Week in the City of Yorkton.
"It's an opportunity to give thanks to the many brave men and women who gave of their lives," said Peter Wyatt on behalf of the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion to Yorkton City Council members Monday evening.
Throughout the week numerous events have been planned in honor of local veterans, including a flag raising ceremony slated for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2 at City Hall.
Wreath sales will get underway on October 29 and as well, the annual poppy campaign will kick off this month. Businesses can expect to see local veterans stopping by and residents will be approached by Yorkton cadets to purchase poppies in support of our veterans. In addition, two color parties will be visiting schools and nursing homes to share stories and experiences.
On Sunday, November 7 beginning at 11 a.m., veterans will gather for a church parade at St. Gerard's Parish and on the 11th the week will wrap up with an annual Remembrance Day Ceremony slated to take place at the Yorkton Gallagher Centre Flexihall. The service will get started at 10:30 a.m. It will be followed by fellowship and refreshments at the Legion lounge and the by a special banquet complete with entertainment. A limited number of banquet tickets are available at a cost of $15 by calling the legion office at 783-9789.
