The Sacred Heart Senior Girls Volleyball team began the 2010 volleyball season this past weekend at the Yorkton Regional Tournament. This year the Lady Saints is made up of 12 athletes.

Coach Perry Enns says, "We have a veteran team with six Grade 12 athletes, as well as three Grade 11 and three in Grade 10."

The Lady Saints first faced Yorkton Regional High School. Sacred Heart came out very strong winning game one: 25 to 21.

In the second game the Saints did not start with the same power and dropped game two: 17 - 25.

The Lady Saints faced several strong teams losing two straight to Balgonie and Oxbow. The final round robin game versus John Taylor Collegiate of Winnipeg would decide if the Lady Saints would advance into the playoffs.

Winnipeg surged out to an early lead and won the first game 18-25. The Lady Saints now were in a must win situation and they responded. Strong serving and some great net play helped Sacred Heart take an early lead and never look back winning game two, 25-16.

The win placed SHHS in fourth place and gave them a seed in the playoffs.

The Lady Saints then faced a strong team from Weyburn who placed first in Pool B. A much taller Weyburn team defeated the Saints two straight 11-25 and 17-25.

Coach Perry Enns said he was very happy with the teams showing.

"I thought we performed at a much higher level than I expected for our first tournament of the year. I was especially impressed with the play of Mariel Kotyk (Gr. 11) who passed extremely well for us, and Skylar German (Gr. 10) who led the team in blocks."

The Lady Saints will travel to the University of Regina next weekend to take part in the 16 team Autumn Classic.
