BROOKLYN FIESEL improves her wakeboarding skills at a recent wakeboarding clinic at York Lake.

Everyone from seasoned athletes to kids hitting the water for the first time had something to learn at the wakeboard clinic, recently held at York Lake.

Josh Dutchak, coach at the wakeboard camp, has been wakeboarding since 2002, and has been involved in the sport ever since, from competing to coaching. He says the goal is to get kids on the water and trying new things, whether that means a beginner is just on the water, or someone more experienced is learning new tricks.

"There's kids doing it for the first time and some from the SaskFirst Wakeboard team. So we've got kids just getting up and kids doing flips," Dutchek notes.

Coaching different experience levels leads to different approaches. Dutchek says with the beginners, it's about getting them comfortable on the board and able to stand and learn basic edging and how to jump the wake.

"Once you're there, it's endless what you can do," Dutchek says.

For the more experienced riders, the day was focused on learning new tricks, flips and twists.

"Once you get the hang of it, you just need to try it and listen to your coach, and it'll work out," Dutcheck says.

The week has been a great one for getting people on the water, Dutchek notes, with sunny skies and a calm lake contributing to a overall positive experience.
