Cheaters beware - what "happens in Vegas" - or wherever - isn't likely to stay there, not these days anyway.
Last week a new, controversial website launched in Canada and in less than a week it had over 10,000 profiles added to it. It's a definite hit.
Already popular in the states, the new online hotspot is called cheaterville.com. It's a space for people to not only vent, but to post the names, photographs and the hometowns of those accused of "stepping out." No "checks" are done on the content and it's up to the users to ensure the validity of the content. I smell trouble...
I had a peek at the site and it's undoubtedly going to be a hit on this side of the border as it is in the US, but is it going to be helpful or harmful when all is said and done?
For whatever reason, it's pretty apparent from sites like Facebook and the like that people seem to enjoy sharing their personal details and talking about the ins and outs of life in a public forum. But just how accurate IS what people say? I mean really, a person can literally say anything they like and there is no one to verify if what's being typed is accurate. So imagine, if you're feeling a tad spiteful? With a site like cheaters.com, you could do a fair bit of damage to a person's reputation.
The owner of the site, a former US marine, says he got the idea for it when a fellow marine found out his wife was cheating while he was deployed overseas. He says now, "I've had people come up and tell me that they've thought twice when they're out at a bar at night about cheating because of the fear they would get blasted on Cheaterville." Really? I'm pretty sure ad sales haven't deterred the former marine from pressing on with his idea either.
I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that nobody wants to be "the last to know," I just have to wonder if a public online forum is really the best place to air your dirty laundry? Once something is typed, it's out there and there's no way to get it back.
Talk to your friends, find whatever support networks you need and/or let the person have it face-to-face but if you ask me, the internet isn't the smartest venue to use to broadcast your personal affairs for all to see.
