Wow! Now THAT is creativity!
Money is tight these days for a lot of people so what's a gal to do with her wedding day drawing closer and no dress to her name?
Get creative! That's what!
Armed with a hot glue gun, duct tape and lots of ingenuity, that's what Susan Brennan did. The first place winner of a recent national contest, Brennan took just one week to create a very impressive dress and her only cost was time and four jumbo rolls of toilet paper. Yes you heard it, toilet paper!
Traditional white of course, the dress features flowers along the bottom (not the tissue flowers we used to make either), a pleated bodice, feather work and even a bracelet and hairpiece.
"I did techniques you could do with fabric," she says, "but instead of stitching them, I used tape and glue... a lot of tape and glue."
It's practically free, it's fun, it's literally disposable and it even absorbs spilled drinks! What more could you ask for???
Actually, when I heard of the contest I couldn't imagine how a toilet paper dress could turn out like something a gal planning her dream wedding might want to wear but I have to say I was quite impressed. There were five dresses designed in total for the contest and I think I'd wear any one of them. Check out: www.cheap-chic-weddings.com if you'd like to see.
This wasn't Brennan's first dress making experience. She once made one out of potato chip bags - no doubt to make a grand grad appearance - and she hopes her recent exposure will turn her hobby into a full time creative career and I say - the more power to her!
Whether it's making dresses or coming up with the next big invention, it's people like this that make the world go 'round and my hat goes off to them.
We may not all be able to afford to "keep up with the Jones's" but with a little creativity, we sure can look like we do!
