To the Editor:
In his letter, published Aug. 4 (It's intrusive, abusive, invasive), Joe Gingrich suggests that gun owners would be better off supporting the NDP.
The Saskatchewan Party has always opposed the long gun registry as an exercise in bureaucracy that does not increase public safety. Our government opposes the registry provisions of federal Bill C-68 and has ordered provincial employees not to enforce those provisions in Saskatchewan.
By comparison, the federal and provincial NDP firmly support the registry. In fact, last fall, NDP Members of Parliament were ordered to vote in favour of the registry over the objections of their constituents. Anyone who thinks the NDP is likely to change their position is kidding themselves.
The Saskatchewan Party does, however, believe a properly-managed licensing system for gun owners can add to public safety. This government will continue to work to protect the safety of all Saskatchewan people.
