Yorkton Minor Hockey (YMH) hosted a six team Tier 1 atom hockey tournament over the weekend.

Tournament coordinator Noel Budz says the event which featured six very competitive teams went over very well. Usually the tournament hosts eight teams, Budz reports. "This year we had over 30 calls, but only nailed down six teams in the long run," he says.

Participating teams included Regina Blackhawks, Estevan Bruins, Moosomin Ice Badgers, Saskatoon Frostbite Flyers, Saskatoon Red Wing Riot and the Yorkton Xerox Terriers.

Yorkton, Moosomin and the Saskatoon Frostbite Flyers were all off to a very good start, Budz states.

Budz thanks tournament title sponsor SherRing Gold and all sponsors. "Without their help, the tournament would not have been possible," he suggests.

He also thanks parent volunteers and tournament co-coordinator Kim Maier for their work in oganizing and running a successful event.

The Yorkton Xerox Atom Terriers emerged as tournament champions winning the A-side final over the Estevan Bruins by a score of 11-1.

Team coach Chad Korczak says the gold medal win was the result of a great team effort all weekend. "The boys played as a team. We didn't have any individual play and it worked out well," he suggests.

Korczak says the Xerox Atoms are a big team who move the puck well. They're also pretty solid on the back end as well, he adds.

The atoms have had a very successful season this year running up a record of 38-1 to this point. "The kids are just playing well and they're having fun," Korczak closes.
