Yorkdale Central School hosted an elementary volleyball Tournament for both boys and girls over the weekend with the four boys' teams playing at Yorkdale while the eight girls' teams played at the Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS). Most of the teams were from the Yorkton and the surrounding communities with the exception of a boys' team from Dauphin, Manitoba.

Tournament coordinator Shaune Beatty, coach of the Yorkdale girls' team, says volleyball at this entry level is developmental with a fun, competitive side.

While there are a wide range of skills, from beginners to those who are a step or two above beginners, most kids are encouraged are encouraged to participate.

The tournament format was a round robin with a crossover event which saw the first place team square off against the fourth place team and the second place team taking on the third place finishers in a single elimination into the playoffs.

Beatty expressed his appreciation to YRHS and the Dauphin 4-H Club for their help in putting the tournament together.

"It's nice to come to a volleyball community like Yorkton and seeing these boys and girls get off to a good start and hopefully they contribute to and continue playing the game," Beatty states.

Both Yorkdale girls' and boys' teams are competitive and definitely in the hunt for the city-wide championship, Beatty suggests. "We have to play consistent and play well, but that's one of our goals," he concludes.
