The Yorkton Atoms hosted a 16 team tournament over the weekend with action at both the Kinsmen Arena and at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
Tournament coordinators Krista Gordon and Margo Gray report there were 213 players on 16 teams in the city for the event.
The Tier 2 tournament featured nine and 10 year-old players from Yorkton, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, they point out.
Some of the players are in their fifth year of minor hockey as the Atoms are the third level after the IP and novice levels, Gray notes. "The skill levels are everywhere," she adds.
While the tournament was mainly reasonably competitive, there were a couple of blow-outs, Gordon says. She also points out one overtime game ended in a shootout.
Four Yorkton novice teams competed in the tournament, including Yorkton Deneschuk Atomic, Yorkton Richardson Atomic, Yorkton Scoops Atomic and Yorkton B&K Trucking Atomic.
The coordinators thanked the tournament title sponsor McDonalds Restaurant for their sponsorship. "Dean and Tricia Shyiak are major sponsors," Gordon continues.
Gray also expressed her appreciation for the organizing committee made up of members of the four Yorkton novice teams.
The coordinators thanked teams, coaches and officials for their roles in a successful tournament.
"Thank you to the Yorkton Terriers because they're giving every kid a free admission tonight to the game, all 213 kids," they close.
Weekend results had the St. Brieux Nordiques win the D side over The Pas Huskies.
The Naicam Vikings claimed the C side over the Melfort Storm.
Yorkton Richardson Atomic won the B-side title over Yorkton B&K Trucking Atomic.
Tournament champs, claiming the A side title over the Yorkton Scoops Atomic was Swan River.
