The Yorkton Blitz Nitro U15 girls captured the Tier 1 championship at the recent ASCICS Cup 1 tournament hosted by the McSweeney's Selects and the Sask Volleyball Association.

Yorkton Blitz coach Bryce Krawetz says the competition at the tournament was good right across the board. It was a very good first competition of the year to open their season, he says. The Nitro will follow up with ASCICS Cup 2 in Saskatoon in a couple of weekends.

This year he has 10 players on his bench. An injury reduced that number to nine players

Overall, the gold medal win was a total team effort, Krawetz reports. "We used all of our bench in our final set to get the win. It wasn't just putting six players on the court. Each player played the role that they had to," he states.

Krawetz says the Blitz were very good at adjusting to the variety of teams and styles at the tournament. He had to pull his team back a bit to adjust for the very good attacking teams. Then he also had to adjust to the teams that were tipping well against his girls. "With all the practising we've done, we had the ability to adjust the defense accordingly," he relates.

The gold medal win to open the season is both good and bad, Krawetz suggests. "It's a nice thing to win a tournament at the beginning of the year but teams are probably going to be gunning for us now for the rest of the year," he closes.
