The Yorkton Harvest fell on hard times this week with three losses.
The visiting Notre Dame Argos outshot the Harvest 39-24 at the Farrell Agencies Arena Wednesday night to come away with a 7-2 win in a contest that looked close until about late in the second period when the Argos exploded with three goals in a little over a minute.
The Argos opened with a three goal first period scored by Brody Jorgenhson, Lucas Batt and Dion Antisin.
Yorkton managed to keep things close with a pair of second period goals. Tanner Lesann notched a single handed goal midway through the period. Kailum Gervais followed up with a power play goal less than 30 seconds later assisted by Jeffrey Ness and Dakota Odgers.
Three quick goals by Austin Lightfoot, Antisin, and Roman Melzer killed the Harvest momentum and, following a scoreless third, any chance of coming from behind for a win.
Harvest head coach Jeff Odgers says Yorkton's last win in Regina was a result of an effective power play. "We went six for 18. Our power play got hot and came up and got us a win," he recalls.
Ogders points out some good individual performances. Devin McGonigal got a hat trick. Jake McMillen who has been a leading goal scorer all year played well. Dakota Odgers had a good game. Spencer Bomboir made some big saves to give the Harvest a chance to comer back from a two goal deficit.
On the other hand the Harvest gave up five power play goals Wednesday night, Odgers notes. "You're not going to win many games doing that," he states.
The Harvest needed a key block or a big save to regain the momentum, but simply couldn't find either, Odgers says.
Yorkton had at least two five on three power play opportunities which they were unable to capitalize on, he says. "Those are the chances you have to take advantage of and we didn't," he admits.
Saturday night the home team, the Beardy's Blackhawks downed the visiting Yorkton Harvest 10-3 at the Willow Cree Memorial Sport Centre on the strength of four first period goals, five second period goals and a single third period goals. Beardy's power play was responsible for five power play goals on 10 chances, a remarkable 50 per cent average.
The Blackhawks first period scoring came off the sticks of Landon Robin, Braden Oleksyn, Owen Le Claire, and Elliot Peterson.
Dakota Odgers scored the lone first period goal for Yorkton assisted by Kailum Gervais and Blake McMillen.
Peterson, Tyson Rosner, and Evan Zdunich opened the second period with a power play goal each, while Robin and Jared Watson each notched a short handed goal for a total of five second period goals.
Brayden Park scored for the Harvest with seven seconds left in the second period assisted by Gervais and LeSann.
LeSann notched his second goal of the night, a single handed goal to cap Yorkton scoring in the game.
Ryan Suchorb capped game scoring late in the period to hand the black hawks a 10-3 win.
Sunday afternoon the Contacts handed the Harvest an 8-2 loss at the Schroh Arena in Saskatoon.
Saskatoon opened the scoring with a pair of first period powerplay goals from Bryn MacNab and Josh Urich.
The Contacts added a pair of goals in the second period by Urich and Vukie Mpofu.
Jaden Kreklewich scored the lone goal for Yorkton in the second frame assisted by Branden Kayter and Devin McGonigal.
Four third period goals by Branden Schiedl, Kolton Olynek, Rhett Kehoe and MacNab pretty much sealed the win for the Contacts.
LeSann added York-ton's second goal late in the third assisted by Jeffrey Ness.
