Yorkton kicked off Parks and Recreation Month in the province with an activity filled afternoon at Weinmaster Park. Clive Craig, local SPRA volunteer, says Yorkton was selected by the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) as the host centre for the official kick off to the June is Parks and Recreation Month. The event was aimed at creating an awareness of the beautiful parks both in Yorkton and around the province as well as encouraging people to use them, Craig continues.

Activities at Weinmaster Park included a hot dog barbecue, and activities for families, including face painting, games and carnival activities, Craig reports.

Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit says the SPRA, a recognizable volunteer organization in the province, works hard to encourage active participation through recreation and sport for a healthier community and healthier lifestyle by getting out and getting active.

It's important to recognize the work they do by setting aside a day and a week specifically for that purpose, to bring awareness and get people out and getting active.

Yorkton city councillor Larry Pearen says the city of Yorkton is proud of its green spaces, parks and facilities. While some may take them for granted, lots of visitors who come to the city are amazed by the facilities like the Gallagher Centre and Deer Park.

"We're also very proud that the provincial launch took place in our city," says Pearen. Yorkton has been the site of many provincial launches in the past, recognizing the city as a good place to host launches, he states.

Pearen thanks all the many volunteers who help to make Yorkton a wonderful place to live by improving the quality of life. "As always we're Yorkton where good things continue to happen," he closes.

Yorkton recreation services manager Darren Spelay says Yorkton has a lot of excellent green spaces like Weinmaster Park. The city's been doing an excellent job supporting and replacing playgrounds over the last few years, putting in spray parks and recently opened the first disc golf course in the area at Patrick Park. "We're moving forward and offering the community recreational opportunities that can be enjoyed in the summer months at no charge," Spelay states.
