Yorkton celebrated Canada Sports Day hosting a variety of activities around the community.

The Yorkton Tennis Club was one of the stops on the activity filled day Saturday along with a disc golf clinic at Patrick Park. The Gloria Hayden Centre offered a walking clinic, squash and racquetball demonstrations and introductory clinics.

Amber Zaharia, Yorkton urban sports coordinator explains the day was part of National Sports Day in Canada which was promoted through the CBC and Participaction. "We could pretty much schedule any event and we wanted to promote the Gloria Hayden Community Centre, walking track, the tennis courts and the new disc golf course at Patrick Park.

The sports day was a kick-off for the annual free track and court week at the Gloria Hayden Community Centre. Residents were able to use the walking track or book a squash or racquetball court for free all week until Friday, September 23 either as an individual, as a family or with a friend.

Zaharia says Yorkton will try to continue a similar day every year. "So watch for it every fall around this time of year. We'll try to expand the events," she reports.

Anyone who has any questions about any sport opportunity in Yorkton can contact Amber 828-2401.

Blaine Stoll, tennis club president, says the tennis clinic was held in conjunction with the club's annual social. It provided the public with an opportunity to see the facility and equipment and to try their hand at tennis, Stoll explains.

The Yorkton Tennis Club is a volunteer organization which usually operates from April until October or until the weather prevents use of the outdoor courts. Typically club events are scheduled Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. There's a ladies group and a men's group. Sundays are family days occasionally, Stoll points out.

Membership in the club is voluntary. "As long as you participate in the club events and come out on an occasional basis, you're welcome to be a member of the club," Stoll announces.

The premier location for Tennis in Yorkton is the one at the Western Development Museum which has four courts, says Stoll. In addition, there are two courts at Heritage Heights Parks, two more at the Knights of Columbus Park on Circlebrooke Drive and one court in Silver Heights Park. "For a city the size of Yorkton there are good playing opportunities in beautiful settings," Stoll suggests.

If people are interested in trying tennis, they should come out during the club's evening and mix in with club members. "You don't have to be anybody special. Just come out and have some fun and some fresh air," Stoll closes.
