The Yorkton Springers gymnastics competitive girls recently returned from provincials where the team performed very well with the eight members capturing ten medals in total.
Springers head coach George Baranyai admits he expected a slightly better result, but was happy with their overall performance. Nerves may have been a factor as it was the first major provincial competition for many of the girls, he suggests.
Baranyai noted the performances of a couple of the girls. Shalysa Brown, who earned a gold medal in her floor routine, finished third overall at provincials, he says. Brown had the best overall result of the Yorkton Springers team. Cassidy Stachowich, who won a gold medal in the vault event, finished fourth overall in her class.
Competition was very tight, Baranyai claims. He had some reservations about the judging as well. He admits he had expected a slightly different style of judging. "Every competition is different as people judge every routine slightly differently," he suggests.
The eight member Yorkton Springers team was the biggest team Yorkton has put together. The club had never qualified eight gymnasts for provincial competition previously, Baranyai points out.
The provincial championships wrapped up the competitive season for the club. Training isn't quite done, however, Baranyai points out. The provincial competitive team continue to train until the end of June. They will take the months of June and July off and start up again in August.
The recreational gymnastics members finished their season at the end of April and will resume in September, Baranyai reports.
