Yorkton Terriers claim Sherwood Conference title

The Yorkton Terriers proved to be an irresistible force, astounding many local hockey pundits who predicted a protracted series in each of the two playoff rounds. After finishing first in the SJHL south, the Terriers swept both Estevan and Kindersley in four straight games and to add insult to injury, chalking up back to back shutouts, one on home ice and the other at Kindersley. In that final series, Yorkton outscored the opposition 24-4 to claim the Sherwood Conference title for the second year in a row.

The Terriers came out of game three in Kindersley with their second shutout of the series with an identical 7-0 score they recorded in the second game at home.

Justin Buzzeo opened game scoring with an early first period goal assisted by Clarke Breitkreuz and Robbie Ciolfi.

Ciolfi made it 2-0 minutes later assisted by Breitkreuz and Buzzeo.

Four second period goals pretty much set the tone of the game, leaving the Klippers on their heels.

Buzzeo struck early in the second frame with a solo short handed marker, his second goal of the night, to put Yorkton ahead by three.

Jeremy Boyer made it 4-0 for Yorkton with a singlehanded goal of his own midway through the period.

Buzzeo completed his hat trick a little past midway in the second with a power play goal assisted by Blaine Tendler.

Not to be left out, Breitkreuz scored the fourth goal of the second period, a power play marker, to make it 6-0 for Yorkton assisted by Buzzeo who had a five point night with three goals and a pair of assists.

Breitkreuz iced the cake, scoring the seventh goal of the game for Yorkton early in the third period assisted by Ciolfi.

With the win the Terriers outscored their opponents 21-2 in three games.

As expected, the Kindersley Klippers weren't prepared to roll over and play dead in the second game at the West Central Events Centre Wednesday night. The Terriers knew they were in a tough game, battling to narrowly edge out the Klippers 3-2 to sweep the series and claim the Sherwood Conference championship.

Riley Paterson who scored the first goal in the four game series at home the previous Friday night, opened the game scoring midway through the first period assisted by Craig Eisenhut.

Buzzeo made it 2-0 for Yorkton with his first of two goals late in the period assisted by Ciolfi and Breitkreuz.

Kindersley managed to tie the game in the second period as Taylor Wasden scored early in the period and Andrew Dommet notched the tying goal.

Buzzeo broke the deadlock with his second of the game, which proved to be the game winner, assisted by Tendler.

The teams battled through a scoreless final frame as the Yorkton Terriers claimed the final series in four games to emerge as the SJHL Sherwood champs for the second consecutive year.
