With the winter season almost coming to a close, the Yorkton Wildlife Federation hosted its annual fundraiser, dance and banquet as well as their 2014 Awards Night at the St. Mary's Cultural Centre in an attempt to raise money for responsible hunting and fishing.
Director Heath Dreger mentioned that the annual event is crucial for the group to ensure that the conservation of wildlife continues in the area. Something that is important for both the ecosystem and local hunters.
"We use the funds for our mission which is to make sure that our wildlife have the best possible environment which is very important to us as people who love the outdoors and for the people around the Parkland who enjoy fishing and hunting as without a good environment we can't enjoy the outdoors," says Dreger. "Without wildlife and the environment around us there is nothing so giving back to ensure that our surroundings and wildlife are treated in the way we would want to be treated ourselves is extremely important to me and the rest of us."
The event was well attended and Dreger mentioned the recognition of awards is a nice touch on the event. "We hand out awards for those in the federation who deserve recognition as well as awards for fishing, hunting and etc," mentions Dreger.
The event also featured special guest speaker Mike Mc--Cullough from the Saskatchewan Rough-riders who came to Yorkton to share his experiences in winning the Grey Cup and as well as his experiences with the outdoors.
"It was nice to have such a popular figure in the province come down and speak at our event and obviously with the Riders being so popular a lot of the people who attend our event really were looking forward to having McCullough come and be our special guest speaker this year."
