The Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) Grade 9 girls hosted an eight team volleyball tournament over the weekend. Grade 9 Lady Raiders head coach Dee Dee Walker reports the team finished first in the pool A in the round robin part of the tournament.
They crossed over to the B-side to play against Estevan who finished fourth in pool B.
A two straight game win against Estevan advanced the Lady Raiders to the tournament final against Melville St. Henry's Saints. Melville St. Henry's claimed the tournament championship in tow sets with YRHS finishing as tournament runners-up.
Walker suggests the girls may have been a little tired in the final match after sweeping the round robin and defeating Estevan in the semi-final. All-in-all, she was happy with the way the girls played.
She admits the girls may have played with a little less effort than they were capable of in the final match. They had very few hits which was a disappointment because most of the girls are very good hitters, Walker asserts. "That's what happens. They get nervous in the final. I've seen it, been there, done that," she says.
Overall Walker says the girls had a good tournament. She believes the girls showed a huge improvement since their first tournament in September.
The YRHS Grade 9 girls go to Melville for tournament this weekend.
Their win over the Sacred Heart girls gave the Grade 9 Lady Raiders the conference title which advanced them to the District championship tournament in Churchbridge October 29.
