Canora Aquatic Park preparing for third exciting season

After three years of working at the pool, including the final year of the old Canora swimming pool, Ava Love, a Grade 12 student at Canora Composite School, is looking forward to taking over as pool manager this year.

CANORA - With the arrival of warmer weather, Canora Aquatic Park is scheduled to open for its third season on June 1 assuming preparations go according to plan, reported Aaron Herriges, director of leisure services.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the returning staff from last year and seeing some new faces this year,” said Herriges. “Working with different people in different roles year after year will always have some challenges. Our staff is up to the challenge and is excited to get the new year started.

“The Town takes pride in the amount of people it serves in town and the people it brings into town, which is lots. Fifty per cent or more of the patrons that come through the door at the pool are from out of town.”

After three years of working at the pool, including the last year of the old Canora swimming pool, Ava Love, a Grade 12 student at Canora Composite School, is looking forward to taking over as pool manager this year.

“Working here so far has been a blast!” said Love. “I love the people and I am really looking forward to creating many memories this summer.”

Joining Love on the pool staff as part-time lifeguards are: Breanne Woloshyn, Brandon Harder, Journey Kriger, Carl Wlock, Ferlyn Brass, Alexandra Poncelet, Meric Poncelet, Miah Ruf, Deacon Kriger, Kayden Harder, Eva Agar, Rori Love, Charles Wlock, and Amelia MacMillan.

As in previous years, Canora Aquatic Park will have a variety of programs available in 2025.

“As always, we have our Aquafit every Tuesday and Thursday evening (7 p.m. – 8 p.m.) starting June 3 (hopefully) as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings (10 a.m. – 11 a.m.),” said Love.

“We have lane swims every Tuesday and Thursday evening as well (8 p.m. – 9 p.m.) while our Saturday and Sunday lane swims are in the morning (9 a.m. – 10 a.m.). There will be adult lessons offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays for two weeks out of each month, depending on the amount of interest.”

The first swimming lesson session of the season runs from June 9 to June 20, 4 to 7 p.m.

“Our registration opened May 20 at 5 p.m. and you can register on the Town of Canora - Public access website,” said Love.

“All of our information regarding swimming lessons can be found on that website, including the dates and times, the cost, and a small description of what to expect. On the Town of Canora page, there will be an updated schedule of swim times or any private bookings coming up.”

Love said there was a lot to learn during the early days at Canora Aquatic Park, but they have put those lessons to good use.

“Things are definitely running smoother than when we first opened, we have fallen into quite a routine!”

Aaron Herriges said there is a lot going on at this time of year, but it’s also very rewarding.

“Getting the Canora Aquatic Park facility going comes at the busiest time of year for the Leisure Department as start-ups on multiple fronts are going on at our parks, ball diamonds, campground, pool, golf course and so on.”

As the summer proceeds, Herriges said Canora and area residents should be on the lookout for opportunities to enjoy a swim during special events.

“We’ll be working with the staff and some sponsors again to offer some special events and programs at the park this summer. So keep an eye out for those dates when they are announced.”
