CANORA - Ice installation is underway at the Canora Curling Club, and as is usually the case at this time of year, Canora and area curlers are looking forward to getting back on the ice, according to President Terry Wilson.
At the AGM on Oct. 19, Wilson took a look back and highlighted a strong year for curling in Canora in 2022/23.
“Our league night was very well attended and the Men’s Bonspiel hosted 16 teams for the first time in a long time,” he said. “Our kids program had some very enthusiastic participants and we had some older juniors curling in events outside the club last year. We are now affiliated with CURLSASK and they are an excellent resource for our club.”
In addition to Wilson, the executive members for the coming year are: Sheldon Derkatch, vice-president; Patrick Miechkota, treasurer; Valérie Caza, secretary; Del Palagian, fundraising co-ordinator; Bob Kolodziejski, bar manager; Al Palagian, director, and Bill Foreman, senior rep.
The first Canora Curling Club executive meeting of the season was held on Oct. 29.
“Ice installation is currently underway and should be ready around Nov. 15 barring any unforeseen delays,” reported Wilson.
Plans are once again in place to feature afternoon curling three time each week during the coming season: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m.
“Thursday nights will be open league play, and teams or individuals are encouraged to register by Nov. 15,” said Wilson. “Draw times will depend on the number of teams. This is a fun league that features all level of skills.”
Wilson expects a full slate of bonspiels for the coming season, with details to come at the next executive meeting.
Kids curling will hit the ice on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. More opportunities are on the horizon for young curlers, including a youth bonspiel. Wilson said details will be provided as soon as they become available.
