Local rinks top Canora Senior Bonspiel

The Ernie Gazdewich rink of Canora captured first place in a tiebreaker at the 17-team bonspiel.

CANORA - In what turned out to be a very successful four days for a pair of local rinks, the Canora Senior Bonspiel was held on Jan. 22-25 at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre with a total of 17 teams entered.

Under the Brandon Draw system each team played five games, six ends per game, and received four points for each win plus two points per end when they scored points.

When the dust had settled, the Ernie Gazdewich rink of Canora was awarded first place in a tiebreaker. Other members of the winning foursome were: Clarence Homeniuk (third), Paul Spilchen (second), Cynthia Gazdewich (lead) and Brian Hermanson (spare).

The Gazdewich foursome actually ended up in a tie with the Bob Kolodziejski rink, also of Canora, and the two teams split the first-place money. But the Gazdewich team was declared the winner because they won all five games, while Kolodziejski finished with four wins and a single loss.

In addition to the Gazdewich and Kolodziejski teams, other rinks competing in the bonspiel were: Bill Foreman and Peter Wiwchar of Canora, Laird Gervais of Crystal Lake/Canora; Len Bazarski of Buchanan/Canora, Donna Rock of Canora/Yorkton, Dennis Bymak of Good Spirit, Dave Zbeetnoff of Yorkton, Ross Tressel of Yorkton/Melville, Gerald Preesker of Kamsack, Joe Yacyshyn and Bob Lebo of Preeceville, and Ted Kreklewetz, Bob Lumley, Joy Hubic and Larry Dahl, all of Norquay.
