Another week has come and gone in the world of disc golf in the Parkland Association of Disc Golf region, and again it has been a busy week with many positive developments.

So let’s start in Springside where they will be hosting a Vibram Birdie Bash Sunday, May 29. It is the first event in the PADG tournament series for 2016.

A lot of work has been done at the course since its initial install, including clearing of treed area undergrowth. The clearing has allowed a few tonals and tees to be adjusted creating a few longer fairways. Numbers 16 and 17 are now designated Par 4s, as is #8, creating a Par 57 course.

The event promises to be a grand one with entrants from Saskatoon, Regina, Watrous, Wanless, MB and Birtle, MB as well as local area entrants. It is one of three Vibram Birdie Bashes being held in Saskatchewan this year, and has the largest field of the three.

While it is too late to enter, everyone is welcome to come out Sunday for lunch, and to learn about the sport from the vantage point of a spectator.

Top participants at the Springside tournament not only win prizes, but will earn an invitation to a planned PADG Champions Challenge at season’s end which will invite winners from all the PADG events.

The PADG was also back on the road last week to promote the idea of local course creation. On May 19, they appeared before the regular Council meeting of Sturgis Council.

The presentation focused on all the great attributes of disc golf as a sport and recreation, and how a course could be established in and around the community’s ball diamonds and rodeo grounds.

The new course at Asessippi Beach and Campground is ready for play. All 18 of the homemade baskets are installed (although a couple do need to be lowered once the frost is out of the ground). A bit of course grooming still remains, and numbering of tees and baskets, but if you are in the area you can certainly start tossing discs now.

Good news out of Whitesand Regional Park as well. The first tonal target has been sighted on the course area which will be a full 18, winding its way around the existing sand-green ball golf course creating a dual-use golf facility.

The disc golf course will utilize the sand greens as out-of-bounds areas close to several targets, which will mean accurate placement of approach shots.

The North Ridge Disc Golf Course at Birtle, MB is close to installed as an 18 tonal, that is a Par 72. The course plays through areas of trees and rolling valley hillside with lots to challenge. Several of the longer ‘holes’ will have a second tee marker for beginners, youth and ladies.

The course, where there are already plans in the works to upgrade to baskets as quickly as possible, will hold an official opening Saturday, June 25.
