The first couple months of 2017 have gone by quickly. From January 23 to 27, students were busy studying in preparation for exam week. Since the gym was being occupied for exams, elementary students got their physical activity skating at the Invermay Arena.
On January 23, the SCC held its first ASK (After School Klub) activity of the New Year. The students who participated made string art projects of their names. This consisted of hammering nails onto a wooden board in the shape of letters, and wrapping colourful string around the nails. The kids had lots of fun with this project and they turned out looking great.
On February 9, the SCC had a soup-and-sandwich sale. All proceeds went to the Invermay Winter Festival.
On February 10, grades 8 to 12 students went to the Wadena Community Legion Hall for a presentation by Theoren Fleury, an inspirational speaker who was once a professional hockey player. He spoke about the hardships he’s had in his life, and how he overcame them.
On February 14, the SRC held a Valentine formal day with a dance held in the gym at noon. The Mr. Irresistible contest began at the beginning of the day by giving all of the girls in grades 6 to 12 paper hearts. If they spoke to any boys at recess or lunch, they had to give them their heart. The boy with the most hearts at the end of the day was rewarded with chocolates. Any girls who didn’t lose their heart put their names in a draw to win chocolates. The winner of the Mr. Irresistible contest was Cole Swain and the winner of the draw was Jackie Koturbash. There was also a pizza sale at noon to raise funds for basketball jerseys. Throughout the week, the SRC held a fundraiser selling carnations.
Grades 6 to 12 students went on their ski trip to Asessippi Ski Resort on February 15. It was a warm, sunny day and everyone had a blast going skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.
On February 16 the Red Cross group held Pink Day, which is an annual anti-bullying awareness day. Many staff and students wore Pink Day T-shirts, which the group sold in advance to raise funds for Red Cross. At the beginning of the day, everyone was given a pink sticky note to write a kind message on, and stick on someone’s locker. All of the sticky notes were then collected and posted on a bulletin board in the hallway.
Kindergarten to Grade 5 students went to Duck Mountain Provincial Park for their ski trip on February 17. The weather also co-operated for their ski trip, as the temperature was above freezing for most of the day. It was a great learning experience, and a first-time skiing experience for many of the students.
The SRC was involved in the annual Invermay Winter Festival held from February 17 to 19. Members sold 50/50 tickets and Toonie Toss chips at the hockey game on Friday night. The winner of the 50/50 draw was Shelley Fogg, and the winner of the Toonie Toss was Caidence Keller. On Sunday, the SRC also sold ice cream floats, operated the kids’ fish pond, and did face painting and tattoos. All proceeds went to the Invermay Winter Festival.
The Winter Break for staff and students began on February 18, and everyone returned to school on February 27.
