River Ridge donates $4,000 to schools’ archery program

The archery programs for Canora archery students received a total of $4,000 from the River Ridge Fish and Game last week.

The archery programs for Canora archery students received a total of $4,000 from the River Ridge Fish and Game last week.

On behalf of River Ridge, Hal Thomas presented cheques of $2,000 each for the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) to students of Canora Composite School and Junior Elementary School.

The NASP program is very popular with students in both schools, said Kathy Thomas, president of River Ridge. The funds will be used to purchase equipment and for students’ travel expenses.

About 55 high school students use the archery equipment to shoot three mornings a week and about 37 junior students also shoot three times a week, Kathy Thomas said.

Students in both schools have done exceedingly well in provincial, national and international archery events, she said.

Rod Steciuk and Thomas Lowes, the coaches, both agree that respect and self esteem are the big takeaways for all the students in the program, she said, thanking both of them for their work.

“Without the coaches’ commitment and dedication, this program would not be the success it is,” she said.
