Students encouraged to have body awareness with yoga activities

Students at Canora Junior Elementary School are being encouraged to exercise, relax and learn more about their bodies through a lunch activity.

Teachers Jennifer Prychak and Lisa Strozen have organized a new activity and are teaching students yoga sessions throughout the school months. Students are given designated days to attend after finishing lunch. There is one session for Kindergarten to Grade 2 students, and one session for grades 3 and 4 students.

“We wanted to start an alternate activity for all the children,” said Strozen, who has currently been teaching each group in sessions held two or three times a month.

The younger students learn more basic yoga skills, with the poses integrated into a ‘storytime setting.’ One session had students using poses to tell the story of the movie Frozen.

“We actually start to name the poses for the older students.”

Though this is the first year Strozen has organized this activity, the sessions have been very successful, and she says the students “really enjoy it.”

The goal of the yoga sessions is to get students paying attention to their bodies, learning to stay calm, and learning proper breathing.

“We’re hoping the students will carry the lessons like breathing into the classrooms,” Strozen said.
