While this building is most often referred to as a Post Office, it was in fact a Dominion Government building, housing on the first floor, the post office, and for a period of time the Dominion Lands Office, and the Customs Office. In the early years, the second floor was the living quarters for members of the Royal North West Mounted Police. In 1955, the post office was relocated to the new Federal Building next door, and by 1956 the building became City Hall. It was designated as a Municipal Heritage property in 1989 with Bylaw # 27/89. By the mid-1990s, the building was assessed as not meeting any of the fire and/or building accessibility codes - one of the many problems was a 5,000-gallon fuel tank in the basement, and thus saving the building was determined unfeasible.
The City then purchased the former Federal Building for $1.00, and on December 14, 1993 held the official opening of its new City Hall/R.C.M.P. Building. The special heritage property status of the Post Office/City Hall building was removed with Bylaw #15/94. Demolition began in June of 1994 and was completed in December. The property was converted into City Hall Park, with benches and picnic tables.
