The $5 bicycle registration permit fee has been waived for Bicycle Safety Week.
"In conjunction with Bicycle Safety Week which runs from May 12to May 17, Members of the Yorkton Municipal Detachment of the R.C.M.P. will be holding Bike Rodeos at eight schools during the week as well as at the Gallagher Center on May 17th," Kathy Ritchie, City Clerk told the regular meeting of Council Monday.
"Canadian Tire, SGI, Saskatchewan Prevention Institute and Yorkton Active Transportation have each agreed to provide prizes for our participants for these events. It is anticipated that each student will receive a bicycle helmet as well as a bike lock.
"In conjunction with each of the Bicycle Rodeos we would like to set up a booth to register bikes. This would help to promote the awareness of the need to register bicycles in the City of Yorkton and ultimately increase the number of bikes that do get registered."
Councillor James Wilson questioned "why do we still register bicycles?"
Lonnie Kaal, Director of Finance, said the "short answer" was that the City has licensed bicycles for years, so continues to do so.
"Should we continue doing this? It's certainly something we could look at," she said.
Kaal added in 2013, only four stolen bicycles were returned to owners by having a record through permits.
