In what is potentially the second worst mass killing in U.S. history, 27 people, including 18 children, are reportedly dead.

This morning, a lone gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and opened fire. Newtown is approximately 100 kilometres north of New York City.

In a press conference at approximately 12:45 Saskatchewan Time, Lt. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police, would not confirm any details except that the shooter is dead and the scene is secure.

It is being widely reported, however, that an official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the gunman was a 20-year-old male with ties to the school.

If number of dead is confirmed, it will be second only to the 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech University in which 32 people died.

Among those killed are students from Kindergarten to Grade 4.
