As friends and family stayed warm and prepared for the upcoming springtime break, Army Reservist Lieutenant Cole Janett, 24, of Bredenbury, Saskatchewan took to the frigid spring prairies of Shilo, Mb, in the rolling Carberry Sandhills, and fought with 350 other Reservists from across Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North-west Ontario. From 26 April to 3 May Reservists from 38 Canadian Brigade Group (38 CBG) formed up in Shilo to take part in the ultimate war fighting adventure- Exercise Bison Warrior 2014.
Colonel Ross Ermel, Commander of 38 Canadian Brigade Group, stated, "We rely on our 'Citizen soldiers'- they have always answered our Nation's call, performing valiantly on domestic operations such as the Manitoba Floods of 2011 and in Afghanistan. Exercise BISON WARRIOR's aim is to hone our warfighting skills. Skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork are the backbone of the military and lead to success in all operations both at home and abroad.
Lt Janett has been part of the Canadian Armed Forces for four years. Asked why he joined North Saskatchewan Regiment, he commented, "embrace the 'suck!'." He also added what he looked forward to during the exercise he added, "practicing my trade!"
38 CBG deployed more than 500 citizen soldiers to Afghanistan since 2006, and many have served in various other international and domestic operations. To maintain their morale and readiness, these experienced personnel must be challenged by relevant, progressive, and exciting training events.
