City paves way for development

Yorkton Council gave a bylaw which opens the way for a private developer to purchase a piece of land along Highway 9 and Broadway Street adjacent to the Parkland Mall.

Yorkton Council gave a bylaw which opens the way for a private developer to purchase a piece of land along Highway 9 and Broadway Street adjacent to the Parkland Mall.

A developer "is in the process of acquiring lands from the Ministry of Highways at the northeast corner of Highway 9 and Broadway Street East," detailed material circulated to the regular meting of Council Monday. "The Ministry has established the maximum area of lands they are willing to sell, however have indicated to City Administration and the developer that more lands may be available to the developer by closing portions of Highway 9 North and Broadway Street East.

"In order to proceed with the purchase of the lands the developer is therefore requesting that the City consent to the closure of an approximately 12.32-metre wide strip of land along Highway 9 North, and a 15.13-metre wide strip of land along Broadway Street East. These additional lands will provide sufficient room for commercial development within the site."

In accordance with The Cities Act, formal closure of the street right-of-way required Council adoption of a street closing bylaw, which was given final reading Monday.
